Legal Sports Betting in New Hampshire

New Hampshire began legal sports betting in January 2020.

In July 2019, Governor Chris Sununu signed House Bill 480, which authorized limited sports betting. The statute is RSA 287-I. And in late November 2019, the Executive Council voted to approve the State’s sports betting contract with DraftKings Inc. The Governor issued the following press release:

"We moved fast to get this done, and the deal is a win for New Hampshire," said Governor Chris Sununu. "We are partnering with a world-class company to provide a first-rate customer service experience. With today's vote, everyone will now be able to bet on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in time for this year's Super Bowl."

Unfortunately for Patriots fans, it didn't quite work out as planned. In early January 2020, the Patriots lost to the Titans in a wild card playoff game. But even without the Patriots in the Super Bowl, New Hampshire fans were still able to bet on the game.

So how does sports betting work in New Hampshire? The New Hampshire Lottery conducts and regulates sports wagering within the State. There are three channels of sports wagering: first, through a DraftKings internet mobile platform; second, through physical DraftKings sportsbook retail locations throughout the state; and third, coming later in the year, through traditional lottery retailers.
